Designing for Love

When a client trusts you with their brand, it’s meaningful. When your own child asks you to design the visual identity for his wedding—and his fiancée trusts you both—it’s something else entirely. I was granted the privilege of creating the complete design suite for my son’s wedding. As a designer, I’ve created many items for weddings over the years, but this project was different from the very first conversation.

It started with a logo.

My second great love — after my children — is logo design. I love crafting a symbol that carries deeper meaning, that quietly communicates something true about the people or brand it represents. The mark I designed intertwines their initials, M and J. But look closely: the J is taller and more relaxed in its stance, while the M is traditional and classically beautiful. They’re intertwined, yes — but also balanced. Just like them.

The process that shaped the suite.

What made this project exceptional wasn’t just the design work — it was how the client relationship unfolded. My first rule with any client is that they must be honest with me. The bride honored my request from day one, and I recognize that it takes genuine courage to speak honestly with your future mother-in-law! When my son asked to be included in our text messages about the wedding, I was both delighted and impressed as I noted, “These two operate as a team.”

They collaborated on some decisions and deferred to the other as needed. They always weighed in together on the decisions that mattered most. This dynamic shaped how I approached every piece in the suite — not designing for her or for him, but for them, as a team.

The full suite.

The project grew into a comprehensive collection of branded pieces:

  • Logo & visual identity — the foundational M+J mark

  • Save the date card

  • Invitation suite — invitation, response card, and envelope design

  • Rehearsal dinner invitations

  • Matchbooks for favors

  • Photo booth layout

  • Address stamp

  • Wax seal — used on envelopes and at each place setting

  • Place cards — rehearsal dinner & reception with meal choices

  • Bridal shower invitations, menus, & signage

  • Itinerary cards, waiting when guests arrived at the hotel

  • Programs for the ceremony

  • Large-format crossword puzzle — a custom guest activity that reflected their personalities and story

  • Koozies + pickleball paddles

Every piece carried a consistent typographic system, palette, and the logo mark, so the suite felt cohesive from the first save the date to the final thank you notes.

None of this comes together without a printer you trust completely. For this project — as with so much of my work — I relied on Consolidated Printing Company. They are a true creative partner: skilled, communicative, and genuinely invested in the quality of the final product. When the materials are this personal, knowing your printer will treat them with the same care you put into designing them makes all the difference.

What this project reinforced.

Working closely with a couple through the design process of their wedding materials reveals a lot. The bride has a great eye, tremendous patience, and a creative sensibility that made collaboration genuinely enjoyable. More than the design work itself, I got to witness something rare: two people who love and respect each other, making decisions with care, trust, and even a bit of humor.

That’s what good design does, because it’s not about the designer’s preferences. It’s about understanding who you’re designing for and creating something that feels true to them. The logo, the invitations, the matchbooks — all of it was in service of telling their story.

A strong brand identity doesn’t stop at the paper’s edge, it shows up in every touchpoint, even on the orange peel in your cocktail.
